HCamrone Beats: The Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and what life was like growing up.

Well, my real name is Victor Onyejekwe. I’m known as HCamrone when writing and HCamrone Beats when producing. I was born in Nigeria’s largest city teaching hospital — LASUTH (which stands for Lagos University Teaching Hospital), on the 19th of March, 2001. I have two elder siblings, making me the last child of my family.

Take us through your creative process.

First and foremost, I have always loved music since I was a kid. I listened to legendary Nigerian hitmakers like M.I Abaga, DBanj, WizKid, and 2face (now 2Baba). Previewing their songs on my MP3 with a headset, I paid close attention to the instruments ranging from bass, drums, melodies, etc.

Back in the days, after arriving home from elementary school every day then, I was fond of assembling paint buckets in sets — drumming while singing Nigeria’s national anthem, lol.

I started making beats when I was 14 under exclusive license to my elder brother’s label ‘Soft Sly Men Music Group.’ Having made loads of un-arranged stuff, Soft Sly Men finally released my first beat, “Piano Love,” on my birthday in 2020.

As for my writing skills, I’ve always loved taking notes, mostly about someone or something. In 2017, I started my stage name-titled blog, “HCamrone’s Blog.” A day came when I wrote about the “Lists of WizKid’s Endorsement Deals,” the article was later picked up by Google News, Google Discover, and Google Chrome’s Articles for you — securing over 17,000+ clicks in a day! That was indeed my biggest post on the blog.

What’s the most satisfying career moment you’ve had thus far?

The most satisfying moment I’ve had so far is the huge progress of my hip-hop club hit “Whoop That Bottle.”

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Regarding advice, I think my mother did justice to that. There was a particular day she told me, “My son… Don’t be intimidated about what others have; you could also achieve those things if you focus and target all your energy in what you believe and love the most”.

Which do you prefer, and why, beat making or reporting?

Yoooo! This is really hard. I think reporting should be my favorite, though. As I said before, I love taking down things.

How has the pandemic affected you?

Coronavirus hasn’t really affected me. Although, all prices of goods and services in my area right now are all super skyrocketed!

Are there any tips you can give to aspiring writers and producers?

To aspiring writers, all I can say is that they should always report nothing but the truth or facts when they want to start an article. Many bloggers often report false stories with the sole aim of garnering traffic.

They should strive hard not to use similar instrument kits and samples from other backup sounds (instrumentals) — to aspiring producers.

Who are some of your inspirations?

To be very honest, only God inspires me.

Are there any artists or producers you’d like to work with and why?

Certainly! I would love to work with Drake, Roddy Ricch, French Montana, PsychoYP, Young Thug, Cardi B, Future, and Migos. The reason is that I often make hip-hop/trap instrumentals; they’ll all fantabulously fit in such a genre.

HCamrone

Do you plan to put together any beat kits?

Not yet. As time goes on, I will.

Are there any artists you’re currently working with?

I am associated with Moreschii and Rich Coup.

What are your thoughts on BeatStars, Airbit, and others?

BeatStars and Airbit? I don’t use them because all my instrumentals are always tagged “licensed.” I’ll probably make use of ’em both, just not now.

What are your goals for 2021?

My 2021 goal will be to achieve a lot more in my career as a writer and record producer.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans?

I love my fans! I want them to continue supporting me and never stop vibing to my sound.
