Areej on ‘Hostage’ [Music Review]

London singer and songwriter Areej, has unveiled her latest single ‘Hostage’.

Born Areej Osman in West London, she grew up in a home saturated with music and culture. From r&b classics to arabic, these musical fusions played a huge part in her art creation. Every extra coating became one more entrance into Osman’s cautious constructed world.

Citing mega stars Etta James and Nina Simone as references, Erykah Badu has been one of the biggest inspirations Osman looks up to. A possesses an outstanding vocal sound, laced with a rich soulfulness and storytelling. The Moroccan native has an in-depth width and length to her artistry. On October 2021, Ultra Records and Payday Records, released Areej’s introduction song ‘Guided’.

Off her new debut extended play ‘GBOF’(which stands for Guided By Our Fears), the rhythm and blues piece houses five tracks. ‘Hostage’ being the fourth, holds production credits from Jrocs.

My EP G.B.O.F is a constant reminder that sometimes in life, it is the very things we are afraid of the most” – Osman states. She continues: “G.B.O.F portrays a capsulated moment of darkness with a poignant message… Just like there is always something to be grateful for, there is always a lesson to be learnt (from it)”.
